Walter Huston was a Canadian actor and singer. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948). His son won the Academy Award for Best Director for the same film.
Walter was the son of Elizabeth (McGibbon) and Robert Moore Huston, a provincial farmer. He was married to Ninetta (Nan) Sunderland, until his death. His son, with his former wife, journalist Rhea Gore, was actor, writer, and director John Huston. Among his grandchildren are actor, writer, and assistant director Tony Huston, actress, director, and model Anjelica Huston, and actor, writer, and director Danny Huston. Among his great-grandchildren is actor Jack Huston.
His father was born in Canada, to Scots-Irish Protestant parents. His mother was of Scottish descent.
Walter’s paternal grandfather was Alexander Huston (the son of Samuel Huston and Mary Elizabeth Miller). Alexander was born in Tobermore, County Derry, Ireland. Samuel was the son of William Huston.
