Stockwell Day is a Canadian politician. He was Leader of the Canadian Alliance, from July 8, 2000 to December 11, 2001, and Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons, from September 11, 2000 to December 11, 2001. He has also been a Member of Parliament for Okanagan—Coquihalla (BC), from September 11, 2000 to March 26, 2011, Minister of Public Safety, from February 6, 2006 to October 30, 2008, Minister of International Trade, from October 30, 2008 to January 19, 2010, and President of the Treasury Board, from January 29, 2010 to May 18, 2011.

Stockwell is the son of Gwendolyn “Gwen” (Gilbert) and Stockwell Day. His father was a Social Credit Party candidate in the 1972 election, and a supporter of the separatist Western Canada Concept, and far-right causes. Stockwell partly grew up in Atlantic Canada, Ottawa, and Montréal.

While Stockwell is associated with Western Canada and its political movements, he has no ancestry in the region. His parents were born in Québec, and he has deep roots in the province from both parents, as well as in the Colonial United States.

Stockwell is married to Valorie Martin, with whom he has three children.

Stockwell’s paternal grandfather was Henry Stockwell Day (the son of Moses Henry Day and Adeline Louise Stockwell). Henry was born in Massachusetts, U.S., and was of Colonial American (English) descent. Moses was the son of Moses Henry Day and Sarah Frances Brown. Adeline was the daughter of Stephen Nickerson Stockwell and Anna B. Merritt.

Stockwell’s paternal grandmother was Madeleine McPherson Hall (the daughter of Grant Macpherson Hall and Mary/Minnie Elizabeth Maley/Haley). Madeleine was born in New Brunswick. Grant was born in Québec, the son of John Smythe Hall and Emma Brigham. Mary was born in Ontario, the daughter of George T. Maley and Elizabeth Sarah Baldwin.

Stockwell’s maternal grandfather was Bertram Scott Stewart Gilbert (the son of Hartwell Stephen Gilbert and Maria Lucinda Hussey). Bertram was born in Marbleton, Le Haut-Saint-François, Québec. Hartwell was the son of Solomon Gilbert, whose father was born in Maine, U.S., and of Josephene Amelia Cote, who was likely of French-Canadian and Colonial American descent. Maria was the daughter of James Hussey and Sarah Jane Little, both of whom had grandparents who were from New Hampshire, U.S.

Stockwell’s maternal grandmother was Florence Gertrude Matthews (the daughter of Herbert William Matthews and Hilda Gertrude Kidd). Florence was born in Québec. Herbert was the son of Thomas Matthews and Sarah Boyd. Hilda was the daughter of William Kidd and Mary Jane Swail, whose mother was born in Ireland, with roots in Monaghan.
