John A. Macdonald was a Scottish-born Canadian politician. A Father of Confederation, he served as the first Prime Minister of Canada, from July 1, 1867 to November 5, 1873. He served as Prime Minister again from October 17, 1878 to June 6, 1891. He was a member of the Conservative Party.
Prime Minister Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland, to Helen (Shaw) and Hugh Macdonald. The family moved to Kingston, Upper Canada, in 1820, when John was about five.
Both the first and second Prime Ministers of Canada were born in Scotland (the second was Alexander Mackenzie). The first Canadian Prime Minister to have been born in Canada was John Abbott, who began serving as Prime Minister in 1891, 24 years after Canadian Confederation.
