Shirley Manson is a Scottish singer, songwriter, musician and actress. She is the lead singer of the alternative rock band Garbage. Her father, John Mitchell Manson, is descended from the fishing community of Northmavine, Shetland. Her mother, Muriel Flora (MacKay), was adopted at an early age, and took on the family name “MacDonald”. She is married to record producer Billy Bush. She was previously married to Eddie Farrell.
Shirley’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her third great-grandfather, Magnus Manson.
Shirley’s paternal grandfather was William John Manson (the son of William Smith Manson and Margaret Jameson). Shirley’s great-grandfather William was the son of Henry Manson and Agnes Robertson. Margaret was the daughter of Jacob Jameson and Sarah Tait.
Shirley’s paternal grandmother was Margaret A. Mitchell (the daughter of John Martin Mitchell and Christina Craven). Shirley’s great-grandfather John was the son of James Wilson Mitchell and Mary McRoberts. Christina was the daughter of William Craven and Margaret Wight.
Shirley’s biological maternal grandparents were Hugh Ross and Minnie McKay. The couple were unmarried, which at the time would have meant instant dismissal, so Minnie travelled to Edinburgh and handed her child to an orphanage.
