John Rutledge was an American political figure. He was Governor of South Carolina, from July 4, 1776 to March 7, 1778 (then known as President of South Carolina), and again from January 9, 1779 to January 16, 1782, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from September 26, 1789 to March 4, 1791, and the 2nd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from June 30, 1795 to December 28, 1795.
He was a Federalist Party candidate for President of the United States in 1788-89.
